Industrial Business Zone Surveys—Last Chance to Submit!
We are mailing brief surveys to all local businesses today—look for yours in the mail and don’t forget to turn it in!  Surveys are going out to all firms located in either the North Brooklyn or Greenpoint Williamsburg IBZ.  We use this survey to keep tabs on what is going on in the industrial area, and make sure that the local industrial businesses are getting the resources they need to thrive!  Make sure that you return them to Michael Wilhite or Karen Nieves via mail or fax at 718-963-1905.  Did you lose your copy?  Call Michael at 718-388-7287 x 164 or Karen at x160 to get a new copy.

Loft Law Update
As you may know, in late June Governor Paterson signed a bill expanding NYC’s Loft Law to make it easier for illegally converted lofts to become legal residential units.  13 of NYC’s 16 Industrial Business Zones are exempted from coverage, however the Greenpoint Williamsburg IBZ, the North Brooklyn IBZ and parts of the Long Island City IBZ are included.  This means that landlords or tenants in any industrial building that has at least 3 unrelated residential units living for a 12 month period between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2009 may apply for designation as a legal residential unit.  Landlords will be obligated to bring buildings in compliance with residential code to be awarded final designation.  Loft law status will confer rent stabilization rights upon residents of approved units.

NYC’s Loft Board is still working out implementation details, so we aren’t sure when they will start processing applications.  Once they are prepared, there is a 6 month window for landlords or tenants to submit applications.  If you are concerned about how loft law may affect your business, please contact Leah Archibald at 718-388-7287 x168 or larchibald@ewvidco.com to share your concerns and learn more.

THE KING OF POP AND THE GREENFIELD SUIT
It was the most off-the-wall job a Brooklyn tailor-to-the-stars had ever gotten. Bushwick's Martin Greenfield has fitted Paul Newman and Bill Clinton - but it didn't prepare him for working for Michael Jackson. It was a cloak-and-dagger operation.

UPZONING IN WILLIAMSBURG
WNYC’s Matthew Schuerman visited Greenpoint and Williamsburg recently. He found the redevelopment is just getting started. It is just one of 97 rezonings that have taken place during the Bloomberg administration. But it’s also one of the most ambitious. The goal was to give new life to a decaying waterfront while creating affordable housing and parks.
